Level A2

A2 is where French starts being useful. At this level you can handle routine exchanges — an appointment, a shop, a short phone call — describe your background and immediate surroundings, and understand the main point of clear, standard speech on familiar topics.

This is the largest group of lessons on the site, and it is where the past tenses arrive: passé composé, imparfait, and the choice between them, which is the grammatical decision that most distinguishes an A2 speaker from an A1 one. It also covers the futures, object and relative pronouns, comparatives, the imperative, and the themed vocabulary that gives you something to use them on.

A2 maps to roughly CLB 4–5. If your target is CLB 7 for the Express Entry bonus, this is the middle of the journey rather than the end, but it is the level at which practice starts to feel like conversation instead of exercises. The A2 pathway takes these lessons in teaching order.
