From Punjabi to French

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ 'ਸਕਣਾ' ਅਤੇ pouvoir ਸਿੱਧੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਹਨ: ਮੈਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ = je peux aller, ਬੱਸ ਕ੍ਰਮ ਉਲਟ ਹੈ (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੁੱਖ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ, French ਵਿੱਚ pouvoir ਪਹਿਲਾਂ)। ਪਰ 'ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੈਰਨਾ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ' ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ 'ਆਉਣਾ' ਵਰਤਦੀ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉੱਥੇ pouvoir ਨਹੀਂ, savoir ਵਰਤੋ: je sais nager।

Traps

The present has three stems: peu- for je, tu and il (peux, peut), peuv- for ils (peuvent) and pouv- for nous and vous (pouvons, pouvez).Stem

The imparfait goes back to pouv- (pouvais), and the futur simple uses a third stem, pourr-, with a double r: je pourrai.

Je and tu both take -x: je peux, tu peux, never je peus.Spelling

In a formal question with je, French does not say peux-je: it says Puis-je entrer ? or the everyday Est-ce que je peux entrer ?

The participle pu never agrees and has no feminine: elle a pu, elles ont pu.Agreement

Pouvoir takes avoir in every compound tense.

J'ai pu means 'I managed to', one occasion that worked out, while je pouvais describes an ability or permission that lasted.Register

A negative passé composé says it did not happen: Je n'ai pas pu venir.

Don’t confuse withsavoir →

Pouvoir says nothing stops you or someone allows it, while savoir says you learned how to do it. Je ne peux pas conduire can mean you are not allowed or not in a state to drive, and je ne sais pas conduire means you never learned.

Je sais conduire, mais aujourd'hui je ne peux pas : ma voiture est au garage.

Don’t confuse withdevoir →

Pouvoir opens a possibility or gives permission and leaves the choice to you, while devoir imposes an obligation and does not.

Vous pouvez choisir un autre jour, mais vous devez confirmer avant vendredi.
