Vouloir is your own wish, pouvoir is whether you are able or allowed.

Je veux partir tôt, mais je ne peux pas : j'ai une réunion.

ਮੈਂ ਜਲਦੀ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਪਰ ਜਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ: ਮੇਰੀ ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਹੈ।

I want to leave early, but I cannot: I have a meeting.

Vouloir is a wish for something you do not have yet, while aimer is a liking. Je veux du thé means 'I want tea now', not 'I like tea'.

J'aime le thé, mais aujourd'hui je veux un café.

ਮੈਨੂੰ ਚਾਹ ਪਸੰਦ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਅੱਜ ਮੈਂ ਕੌਫ਼ੀ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
