From Punjabi to French

Traps
The y becomes i before a silent e: je paie, tu paies, ils paient, and in every futur form (paierai, paierons).Spelling
Before a sounded ending the y stays: nous payons, vous payez, payais. French also accepts paye, payes, payent and payerai in the same places; this site shows the -ie- forms, and real texts use both. Paie is also a noun, la paie, meaning pay or a paycheck.

Payer names what or whom you pay (payer le loyer, payer le plombier). Dépenser is to spend an amount of money, and it is the verb for how much goes out.
Nous avons dépensé trois cents dollars cette semaine, mais nous avons déjà payé le loyer.

Don’t confuse withpay for (English)
Where English says pay for, French normally puts the thing straight after payer: payer ses études, payer le repas. Pour appears mainly to give a price, as in payer quarante dollars pour un billet, or in the figurative sense of paying the consequences, as in payer pour ses erreurs.
Elle a payé ses études elle-même.
