Now, and habits. paie covers both "I pay" and "I am paying" — French has no separate continuous form.
A completed past action. avoir conjugates and payé does not — ai payé.
An ongoing or habitual past. Built on the nous-present stem, so payons gives you payais.
About to happen. aller conjugates; payer never moves — the easier future to produce under pressure.
Will happen. Built on paier- — not the infinitive payer. The conditional reuses this stem.
What this table tells you about payer
The past participle is payé, and it takes avoir in the passé composé — so it never changes shape, whoever the subject is. No agreement to remember here.
The futur simple is built on paier-, which is not the infinitive payer. This stem has to be learned, and it is the same one the conditional uses later.
In both the present and the imparfait, je, tu, il/elle and ils/elles are one sound: paie, paies, paient — indistinguishable spoken. Only nous and vous carry an audible ending.
The imparfait is built on the nous-present stem, so once you know payons you already know payais, payait and payaient. Futur proche keeps payer untouched.
