Now, and habits. essaie covers both "I try" and "I am trying" — French has no separate continuous form.
A completed past action. avoir conjugates and essayé does not — ai essayé.
An ongoing or habitual past. Built on the nous-present stem, so essayons gives you essayais.
About to happen. aller conjugates; essayer never moves — the easier future to produce under pressure.
Will happen. Built on essaier- — not the infinitive essayer. The conditional reuses this stem.
What this table tells you about essayer
The past participle is essayé, and it takes avoir in the passé composé — so it never changes shape, whoever the subject is. No agreement to remember here.
The futur simple is built on essaier-, which is not the infinitive essayer. This stem has to be learned, and it is the same one the conditional uses later.
In both the present and the imparfait, je, tu, il/elle and ils/elles are one sound: essaie, essaies, essaient — indistinguishable spoken. Only nous and vous carry an audible ending.
The imparfait is built on the nous-present stem, so once you know essayons you already know essayais, essayait and essayaient. Futur proche keeps essayer untouched.
