Traps

Offrir ends in -ir but its present takes regular -er endings: j'offre, tu offres, il offre, ils offrent.Spelling

A learner who builds it like finir (offris, offrissons, offrissent) gets the whole present wrong.

In s'offrir the auxiliary becomes être, but offert does not agree with the subject, because the thing bought or given (un voyage, des fleurs) comes after the verb and the reflexive pronoun is only an indirect object: elle s'est offert un voyage, elles se sont offert des fleurs.Helper verb

Don’t confuse withdonner →

Donner is neutral: you give a document, a name, a phone number. Offrir carries the sense of a gift or a treat, so a birthday present or a round of drinks is normally offrir.

Donnez-moi votre nom, et je vous offrirai un cadeau de bienvenue.

Don’t confuse withproposer →

Offrir is for what is handed over: a gift, a treat, or a firm offer of a job or a service. Proposer is for putting an idea, a plan or an option forward, and it is the verb that takes de + infinitive: je te propose de venir. Do not use offrir for a suggestion.

Je te propose d'aller au cinéma samedi, si tu es libre.
