  1. to believe someone (accept what a person says)

ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਸੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਦੱਸਣ ਲਈ 'ਤੇ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ('ਉਸ 'ਤੇ ਯਕੀਨ'), ਇਸ ਲਈ je crois à lui ਕਹਿਣ ਦੀ ਗ਼ਲਤੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ। ਫ਼ਰਾਂਸੀਸੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਮੰਨਣ ਲਈ ਕੋਈ ਸੰਬੰਧਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ: je le crois। ਭਰੋਸਾ ਦੱਸਣਾ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ croire en ਵਰਤੋ: je crois en lui।

Traps

The i of the stem becomes y before a sounded vowel ending: croyons, croyez, croyais.Spelling

The imparfait nous and vous forms keep that y and add the i of their ending: croyions, croyiez. The silent endings keep the i: crois, croit, croient. Nous croions and vous croiez are wrong.

The y never reaches the futur simple, which is built straight on the infinitive: croirai, croiras, croira.Spelling

The participle is cru, with no i and no y: j'ai cru, elles ont cru.Spelling

It takes the usual agreement when the object comes before the verb: les histoires qu'il a crues.

In the passé composé, j'ai cru que... tends to report a moment of thinking something, often before the facts corrected it: J'ai cru que tu étais parti.Meaning

In the imparfait, je croyais que... describes what you believed over a stretch of time.

Don’t confuse withpenser →

Penser à is thinking about something, while croire en is trusting it and croire à is accepting that it is true. Je pense à mon examen is not the same message as Je crois en mes chances.

Don’t confuse withsavoir →

Savoir is for something you know to be a fact, croire for something you hold without being sure. Using je sais for a guess sounds certain when you are not.

Je sais que la banque ouvre à neuf heures, mais je crois qu'elle ferme à quatre heures.

ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਤਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਬੈਂਕ ਨੌਂ ਵਜੇ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਮੇਰਾ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਚਾਰ ਵਜੇ ਬੰਦ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
