No preposition comes between chercher and what you look for: the English for disappears. À appears only before an infinitive, and then the meaning is try to.
Put aller or venir in front and the search becomes a pick-up: je viens te chercher means I am coming to pick you up.

A regular -er verb like parler, with avoir. What goes wrong is the construction: the thing you look for follows directly, with no preposition (chercher un emploi, never chercher pour un emploi), so a pronoun is le, la or les: je la cherche. Chercher à + infinitive is a separate use and means to try to.
Chercher is the search, which can go on for a long time. Trouver is the moment it succeeds, and it can be someone else who finds.
