Répondre always takes à before what or whom you answer, so its object pronouns are lui, leur and y.
Read it as English 'reply to': you reply to an email, and French says the same, répondre à un courriel.

Répondre is a regular -re verb like vendre and perdre, so its forms need no special care. The trap is the construction: what or whom you answer always comes after à (répondre à une question, au client), so the pronoun is lui or leur for a person and y for a thing, never le or la.
Répondre is for a person, a question, a message or the phone. When someone rings or knocks, French goes to open the door: je vais ouvrir. Répondre à la porte is a word-for-word copy of English 'answer the door'.
