Now, and habits. vais covers both "I go" and "I am going" — French has no separate continuous form.
A completed past action. être conjugates and allé does not — suis allé(e).
An ongoing or habitual past. Built on the nous-present stem, so allons gives you allais.
About to happen. aller conjugates; aller never moves — the easier future to produce under pressure.
Will happen. Built on ir- — not the infinitive aller. The conditional reuses this stem.
What this table tells you about aller
The past participle is allé, and it takes être in the passé composé — so it agrees with the subject: elle est allée, ils sont allés.
The futur simple is built on ir-, which is not the infinitive aller. This stem has to be learned, and it is the same one the conditional uses later.
In the present, passé composé, futur proche and futur simple, tu and il/elle are one sound: vas, va — indistinguishable spoken. Only je, nous, vous and ils/elles carry an audible ending.
The imparfait is built on the nous-present stem, so once you know allons you already know allais, allait and allaient. Futur proche keeps aller untouched.
