Habiter answers 'where is your home?', and takes the same prepositions as any place: à + city, en or au + country, chez + person.
Sort the three verbs by what each one points at: habiter is where your address is, rester is where you stay for now, vivre is the life you lead there.

From Punjabi to French

The je contracts to j'habite, and the final s or n of the subject is linked to the verb: nous habitons sounds like nous-z-habitons, and vous habitez and ils habitent link the same way. Do not leave a gap before the verb.

The passé composé with a length of time closes the period: j'ai habité à Laval pendant cinq ans means that it is over.

Habiter is where you live, rester is where you stay or remain. A visitor stays in a hotel, but does not live in it.
Je reste à l'hôtel jusqu'à samedi, puis j'habiterai chez des amis.

Both give a place of residence, but habiter points at the dwelling and the address, while vivre points at life there: the way of living, being alive.
