Traps
The present has three spellings of the stem: comprend- for je, tu and il (comprends, comprend), compren- for nous and vous (comprenons, comprenez), and comprenn- for ils (comprennent).Stem
Il comprend takes no -t, even in an inverted question: Comprend-il ? The plural is audible, because ils comprennent ends on an n you can hear.

It agrees with a direct object placed before the verb: la règle que j'ai comprise, les consignes qu'ils ont comprises.

J'ai compris is the moment the point lands: now I get it.Meaning
Je comprenais describes how you were following at the time. So Je n'ai pas compris means I did not catch what was just said, while Je ne comprenais pas means I was lost over a period.

Don’t confuse withentendre →
Entendre is to hear a sound; comprendre is to grasp its meaning. On a bad phone line you can entendre every word and still not comprendre.

Apprendre is the process of learning; comprendre is grasping what is in front of you. A learner can spend a year on apprendre and still comprendre only the easy news.
Elle apprend le français depuis un an et elle comprend déjà les nouvelles.
