Now, and habits. appelle covers both "I call" and "I am calling" — French has no separate continuous form.
A completed past action. avoir conjugates and appelé does not — ai appelé.
An ongoing or habitual past. Built on the nous-present stem, so appelons gives you appelais.
About to happen. aller conjugates; appeler never moves — the easier future to produce under pressure.
Will happen. Built on appeller- — not the infinitive appeler. The conditional reuses this stem.
What this table tells you about appeler
The past participle is appelé, and it takes avoir in the passé composé — so it never changes shape, whoever the subject is. No agreement to remember here.
The futur simple is built on appeller-, which is not the infinitive appeler. This stem has to be learned, and it is the same one the conditional uses later.
In both the present and the imparfait, je, tu, il/elle and ils/elles are one sound: appelle, appelles, appellent — indistinguishable spoken. Only nous and vous carry an audible ending.
The imparfait is built on the nous-present stem, so once you know appelons you already know appelais, appelait and appelaient. Futur proche keeps appeler untouched.
