Getting Started

pour most often means “for,” but it also states destination, planned duration, purpose, opinion and price. The most heavily tested distinction on the TEF/TCF is pour versus pendant.

1. Who Something Is For

French Use Example
pour for you Ce cadeau est pour toi.
pour for her J’ai écrit cette lettre pour elle.
pour for us Ce restaurant est parfait pour nous.

2. Destination

French English Example
pour Paris for Paris Le train pour Paris part à midi.

Note: With a means of transport, pour names the final destination, not a stop along the way.

3. Planned Duration

French English Example
pour deux semaines for two weeks (planned) Il part pour deux semaines.

Note: pour states a duration that is planned from the start. pendant describes time actually lived through — a subtle but real difference.

4. Purpose — pour + Infinitive

French English Example
pour réussir to pass, in order to succeed Il faut étudier pour réussir l’examen.
pour rester en forme to stay in shape Elle fait du sport pour rester en forme.
pour étudier to study Elle est venue au Canada pour étudier.

5. Opinion and Price

French English Example
pour ou contre for or against Es-tu pour ou contre ce projet?
vendu pour cent dollars sold for a hundred dollars Je l’ai vendu pour cent dollars.

6. Fixed Expressions

French English Example
pour toujours forever Je t’aimerai pour toujours.
pour l’instant for now Pour l’instant, tout va bien.
pour cent percent Le taux est de dix pour cent.

7. Exceptions and Traps

Wrong Right Why
Il part pendant deux semaines. (stating the plan) Il part pour deux semaines. pour for a planned duration, pendant for time already lived through.
Il faut étudier à réussir. Il faut étudier pour réussir. pour marks purpose before an infinitive, not à.
Le taux est de dix pourcent. Le taux est de dix pour cent. pour cent is two separate words.
