French Preposition avec: With, Manner and Fixed Expressions
Getting Started
avec is the simplest and most common preposition — most of the time it’s just “with.”
Two things worth knowing: avec doesn’t only mark being together with a person, it also describes manner (avec soin), and its direct opposite is sans.
1. Together — People and Company
| French | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| avec | with friends | Je vais au cinéma avec mes amis. |
| avec | living with someone | Il habite avec elle. |
| avec | with us | Viens avec nous ce soir. |
| avec | with family | Elle passe les fêtes avec sa famille. |
2. Manner or Instrument
avec also states how something was done — even when no person is “with” anything.
| French | English | Example |
|---|---|---|
| avec un couteau | with a knife | Coupe le pain avec ce couteau. |
| avec plaisir | gladly, with pleasure | Je viendrai avec plaisir. |
| avec soin | with care | Elle a préparé le dossier avec soin. |
| avec difficulté | with difficulty | Il a réussi l’examen avec difficulté. |
| avec attention | attentively | Écoutez avec attention. |
Note: English sometimes drops this preposition entirely (“listen carefully”); French always keeps avec.
3. Fixed Expressions
| French | English | Example |
|---|---|---|
| être d’accord avec | to agree with | Je suis d’accord avec toi. |
| se marier avec | to marry | Elle s’est mariée avec un Français. |
| avec le temps | over time | Avec le temps, tout s’arrange. |
4. avec vs. sans
The two sit in the exact same slot, direct opposites: un café avec sucre — un café sans sucre. What changes is only this preposition; the rest of the sentence stays the same.
5. Exceptions and Traps
| Wrong | Right | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Je suis d’accord sur toi. | Je suis d’accord avec toi. | avec for the person, sur for the topic (d’accord sur ce point). |
| Il a réussi avec facile. | Il a réussi avec facilité. | avec needs a noun after it (facilité), not an adjective (facile). |
| Viens avec. | Viens avec nous. | Formal French never lets avec stand alone — it’s only common in Quebec colloquial speech. |
