French Preposition pendant: During, For a Duration and pendant que
Pendant means during or for a length of time that was lived, finished or habitual (pendant deux heures, pendant les vacances); pendant que + a full clause means while. A planned duration is pour; a time still running is depuis; the time a task took is en.
Pendant is often dropped in the past (J'ai attendu deux heures). Add tout to stress the whole period (pendant tout le film). Pendant que sets a background, often in the imperfect (pendant qu'il dormait). Pendant ce temps means meanwhile.
Getting Started
pendant means “during” or “for” — but only for time that has actually elapsed. It has two dangerous relatives: pour (planned duration) and depuis (duration still ongoing).
A bridge from Punjabi and Hindi: Punjabi and Hindi mark the difference with the verb form, as French does with the preposition. ਉਹ ਪੰਜ ਸਾਲ ਇੱਥੇ ਰਹੀ / वह पाँच साल यहाँ रही (finished) is pendant cinq ans, while ਉਹ ਪੰਜ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਇੱਥੇ ਰਹਿ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ / वह पाँच साल से यहाँ रह रही है (still) is depuis cinq ans. ਦੌਰਾਨ / के दौरान is pendant. The limit: ਲਈ / के लिए (“for”) can be any of the three, so decide first whether the time is finished, planned or still running.
