French Conditionnel Passé, Mixed Si Clauses and Regrets

12 min readUpdated October 1, 2026By
The key rule

Never put the conditional after si meaning 'if'.

Si j'aurais su…
Si j'avais su, je serais venu.

The conditional goes in the result clause. Only si meaning 'whether' (il m'a demandé si…) can be followed by any tense.

Getting Started

“If I had known, I would have come earlier.” This describes something that didn’t happen: I didn’t know, and I didn’t come. French uses the conditionnel passé for it:

Si j’avais su, je serais venu plus tôt.

The conditional lesson gave a glimpse of this. Here is the full picture: formation, regret and reproach, mixed si clauses, hypotheses without si, and the news-report conditional that is so often misread.

From Punjabi: Punjabi uses the same form on both sides of a counterfactual: ਜੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਤਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਮੈਂ ਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ. It also leaves the time to context, so one sentence can mean “if I had known” or “if I knew”. French has to choose: si j’avais su (plus-que-parfait) in the si clause and je serais venu (conditionnel passé) in the result. Mixed si clauses (section 4) are the cases where the two clauses have different times.

1 Formation

Conditional of avoir or être + past participle

with avoir (faire) with être (venir)
je j’aurais fait je serais venu(e)
tu tu aurais fait tu serais venu(e)
il / elle il aurait fait elle serait venue
nous nous aurions fait nous serions venu(e)s
vous vous auriez fait vous seriez venu(e)(s)
ils / elles ils auraient fait elles seraient venues

The être and agreement rules are those of the passé composé. Pronominal: je me serais trompé.

2 Regret and reproach: devoir, pouvoir, aimer

In everyday speech the past conditional appears most often with these three verbs:

Form Meaning Example
j’aurais dû + inf. I should have… J’aurais dû réserver plus tôt.
j’aurais pu + inf. I could have… J’aurais pu rater mon vol !
j’aurais aimé / voulu + inf. I would have liked to… J’aurais aimé voir mes parents.
tu aurais pu + inf. you could have… (reproach) Tu aurais pu me prévenir !
il aurait fallu + inf. it would have been necessary to… Il aurait fallu partir à 7 h.

Softening a reproach: Vous auriez pu m’appeler is fairly sharp. Il aurait été utile de m’appeler is more polite and suits a complaint letter.

3 The four si-clause patterns

One rule: never a conditional after si meaning “if”. The conditional goes in the result clause. (When si means “whether”, as in il m’a demandé si je viendrais, any tense can follow: see Conditionnel.)

Condition (si + …) Result About
present future / present / imperative genuinely possible
imparfait conditionnel présent imagined present
plus-que-parfait conditionnel passé imagined past
plus-que-parfait conditionnel présent mixed: past condition, present result

You learned the first two at B1. The third:

  • Si tu m’avais demandé, je t’aurais aidé. (If you had asked me, I would have helped you.)
  • Si nous étions partis à l’heure, nous n’aurions pas raté le train.
  • Qu’auriez-vous fait si on vous avait refusé le visa ?

4 Mixed si clauses (B2)

Life links the past and the present, so two mixed patterns are very useful.

(a) Past condition → present result: si + plus-que-parfait, conditionnel présent

  • Si j’avais appris le français plus jeune, je le parlerais mieux aujourd’hui. (If I had learned it younger, I would speak it better today.)
  • Si elle n’avait pas accepté ce poste, elle habiterait encore à Toronto.
  • Si on avait acheté en 2015, on serait propriétaires maintenant.

(b) Permanent condition → past result: si + imparfait, conditionnel passé

  • Si j’étais plus organisé, je n’aurais pas oublié le rendez-vous d’hier. (If I were a more organised person in general…)
  • S’il parlait français, on l’aurait embauché.

The trick: ask of each clause separately, “when is this?” Past condition = plus-que-parfait; general or present condition = imparfait. Present result = conditionnel présent; past result = conditionnel passé.

5 Hypotheses without si

Using si every time sounds repetitive in B2 writing. Use these instead:

Structure Mood Example

Au cas où takes the conditional, not the imparfait like si. It is the one common conjunction that does.

6 Wishes and regrets: si seulement

  • Si seulement j’avais plus de temps ! (present wish: imparfait)
  • Si seulement je l’avais écouté ! (past regret: plus-que-parfait)
  • Je regrette de ne pas avoir fait mes études ici. (past infinitive)
  • J’aurais préféré que tu me le dises en face. (past conditional + subjunctive)

These are the structures you need for TCF speaking questions like “Si vous pouviez recommencer…” or “Qu’est-ce que vous auriez fait différemment ?”

7 The journalistic conditional: “unconfirmed”

Journalists use the conditional to signal that information is not yet confirmed:

  • L’incendie aurait fait trois blessés. (The fire reportedly injured three people.)
  • Le ministre serait sur le point de démissionner. (The minister is said to be about to resign.)
  • Selon nos sources, l’entreprise aurait licencié 200 employés.

There is no “if” here. Read it as “would have” and the news means the opposite of what it says. In reading texts, selon, d’après or de source policière are the tell.

8 In reported speech

When the reporting verb is in the past, the futur antérieur becomes the conditionnel passé:

  • « J’aurai fini à midi. » → Il a dit qu’il aurait fini à midi.

The full table is in the indirect speech lesson.

Examples

  • Si j’avais su que le bureau fermait à 16 h, je serais parti plus tôt. (If I had known the office closed at 4…)
  • On aurait dû demander un reçu. (We should have asked for a receipt.)
  • Sans la lettre de l’employeur, ma demande aurait été refusée. (Without the employer’s letter, my application would have been refused.)
  • Si mes parents n’avaient pas immigré, je ne serais pas ici aujourd’hui. (mixed)
  • Garde ce numéro au cas où tu aurais besoin d’aide.

Common Mistakes

❌ Wrong ✅ Right Why
Si j’aurais su… Si j’avais su… no conditional after si
Si j’avais su, je viendrai. Si j’avais su, je serais venu. PQP pairs with conditionnel passé
J’aurais dû de partir. J’aurais dû partir. no de after devoir
Elle aurait venue. Elle serait venue. venir takes être
Au cas où il pleut… Au cas où il pleuvrait… au cas où + conditional

Your Turn: If You Could Start Again

A TCF-style speaking question: Si vous pouviez recommencer votre arrivée au Canada, qu’est-ce que vous feriez différemment ? Speak for about a minute. Use one mixed si clause, j’aurais dû, and sans + noun.

Model answer: Si je pouvais recommencer, je commencerais le français avant de partir. Si j’avais appris la langue dans mon pays, je trouverais plus facilement un emploi aujourd’hui. J’aurais dû aussi demander plus de conseils à des immigrants arrivés avant moi. Sans l’aide de mon cousin, je ne serais pas où je suis maintenant. Cela dit, je ne regrette rien : même si c’était difficile, je referais le même choix.

FAQ

Why is Si j'aurais su wrong? Lots of people say it.

The rule is that when si means 'if', it is never followed by the conditional. The correct form is Si j'avais su, j'aurais… You will hear si j'aurais su in casual speech, but it is considered an error and costs marks in an exam.

In the news, does 'l'accident aurait fait deux blessés' mean 'would have'?

No. This is the journalistic conditional: the accident did happen, but the figures are not yet confirmed. It means 'the accident reportedly injured two people'. It comes up often in TEF/TCF reading and listening.

What is the difference between j'aurais dû and je devais?

J'aurais dû partir = I should have left (but didn't: regret). Je devais partir = I was supposed to leave (a plan; it doesn't say whether I did).
