French Preposition depuis: Since, For an Ongoing Duration
Depuis + present tense says that something began in the past and is still true now: J'habite ici depuis 2020. After depuis comes a starting point (depuis lundi) or a duration (depuis trois ans). A past tense appears only in a negative sentence or in a story already set in the past.
An event that is over takes il y a (Il est arrivé il y a trois ans), a finished stretch takes pendant. The same idea can be built as Ça fait trois ans que j'habite ici.
Getting Started
depuis means “since” or “for,” but only for something still true right now. It’s one of the most misunderstood prepositions on this site, because the tense changes too.
A bridge from Punjabi and Hindi: Punjabi and Hindi agree with French here, and English is the odd one out. ਮੈਂ ਤਿੰਨ ਸਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਫ਼ਰਾਂਸੀਸੀ ਸਿੱਖ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ / मैं तीन साल से फ़्रेंच सीख रहा हूँ is J’apprends le français depuis trois ans: ਤੋਂ / से plus a present-tense verb, no “have been”. The limits: ਤੋਂ / से also means “from” and “than”, but depuis is only for time (“from Delhi” is de), and a finished event, ਤਿੰਨ ਸਾਲ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ / तीन साल पहले, is il y a, not depuis.

Note: French keeps the present tense here, unlike English’s ‘have been’. J’apprends le français depuis trois ans — translating this as J’ai appris is wrong, because the learning is still ongoing.
