French Preposition par: By, Through, Per and the Passive Agent
Par means by, through or per: the agent of a passive (écrit par Camus), the channel (par avion, par téléphone), a place you pass through (par la fenêtre) and a rate (trois fois par semaine). Travelling as a passenger is not par: use en or à (en avion, à vélo).
Par avion is for sending (mail); en avion is for travelling. After feelings and states French prefers de (aimé de tous). Speed is à l'heure. Fixed phrases keep no article: par exemple, par hasard, par cœur, par terre.
Getting Started
par has four distinct but related senses: “by” whoever performed an action in a passive sentence, the means something is sent, moving through a place, and a rate (how often per unit).
A bridge from Punjabi and Hindi: ਵੱਲੋਂ / ਦੁਆਰਾ and द्वारा (“by”) mark the agent: ਕਾਮੂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ = écrit par Camus. ਰਾਹੀਂ / के ज़रिए (“through, by means of”) is par for a channel or a go-between: ਡਾਕ ਰਾਹੀਂ = par la poste, ਇੱਕ ਦੋਸਤ ਰਾਹੀਂ = par un ami. And ਹਰ … / प्रति is the rate par. The limit: ਰੇਲ ਰਾਹੀਂ / रेल के ज़रिए (“by train”) uses the same ਰਾਹੀਂ for transport, but French says en train, en avion, à vélo, not par.
