The key rule

Dans means inside a bounded place (dans le tiroir, dans la rue) and keeps its article. With time, dans counts forward from now (dans deux heures), while en gives how long a task took (en deux heures). For how you travel use en (en train); for a place inside a vehicle use dans (dans le train).

Je pars en deux heures. Il joue sur la rue. Elle boit de un verre.
Je pars dans deux heures. Il joue dans la rue. Elle boit dans un verre.

The test: if the question is 'how?' use en; if it is 'where?' use dans; for the past use il y a. You drink out of a glass with dans un verre, not de. For a city use à, for a country au or en, not dans.

Getting Started

dans’s core idea is a single, very clear one: inside a bounded space. A box, a room, a car, a city, or a slice of time — if something is inside it, use dans.

The hard part isn’t meaning, it’s choosing — dans vs. en, and dans vs. sur. This lesson is built entirely around that choice.

A bridge from Punjabi and Hindi: Punjabi ਵਿੱਚ and Hindi में are very close to dans for a place: ਦਰਾਜ਼ ਵਿੱਚ / दराज़ में = dans le tiroir. The limit is time: ਦੋ ਘੰਟਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਵਾਂਗਾ / दो घंटे में आऊँगा (from now) is dans deux heures, but ਦੋ ਘੰਟਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੂਰਾ ਕੀਤਾ / दो घंटे में पूरा किया (it took that long) is en deux heures. The same ਵਿੱਚ / में hides two French words. Another trap: ਗਲਾਸ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਪੀਣਾ / गिलास में से पीना (“drink from a glass”) is boire dans un verre, not de.

1 Physical Space — Inside Something

French Use Example
dans inside a box or container Les clés sont dans le tiroir.
dans inside a room Il est dans la cuisine.
dans inside a vehicle J’ai laissé mon sac dans la voiture.
dans inside a book or newspaper Je l’ai lu dans le journal.
dans within part of a city Il y a du bruit dans le quartier.

Note: an article almost always follows dans — dans la boîte, dans un tiroir. This is the most reliable way to tell it apart from en, since an article almost never follows en. When in doubt, use this test.

2 Time — “How Long From Now”

dans + time always means “this much time from now.” It’s a future statement.

French English Example
dans une heure in an hour (from now) Je te rappelle dans une heure.
dans deux jours in two days Le résultat arrive dans deux jours.
dans une semaine in a week Il part dans une semaine.
dans un mois in a month On déménage dans un mois.

Note: For the past, don’t use dans — use il y a: il y a deux jours = two days ago. And for how long a task took, use en.

All three side by side:

All three collapse to roughly the same “in / ago” in English, which is exactly why they get mixed up when listening.

3 dans vs. en — Transport

Both are correct here, but they say different things.

French Use Example
en train means of travel Je vais à Québec en train.
dans le train location inside one specific train J’ai oublié mon sac dans le train.
en voiture by car On y va en voiture.
dans la voiture inside the car Les enfants dorment dans la voiture.

Easy test: if the question is “how did you get there?”, use en; if the question is “where is it?”, use dans.

4 dans vs. sur — Street, Chair, Screen

For a few places, French thinking runs opposite to English.

French English Idea
dans la rue on the street A street is an enclosed space between buildings.
dans le journal in the newspaper Inside the thing you’re reading.
dans l’avion on the plane Inside the plane, not on top of it.
dans le bus on the bus Inside the bus.
sur internet on the internet A screen is treated as a surface.
sur la table on the table Genuinely on top.

Note: sur la rue is a direct translation of English “on the street” and counts as a mistake on an exam. You may hear it in casual Quebec speech because of English influence — but write dans la rue. Full detail in the sur lesson.

5 Figurative Uses

French English Example
dans ce cas in that case Dans ce cas, on annule.
dans le doute when in doubt Dans le doute, demande.

dans also appears for an approximate amount: Ça coûte dans les vingt dollars = about twenty dollars.

6 Exceptions and Traps

Wrong Right Why
Je pars en deux heures. Je pars dans deux heures. dans for “from now.”

Il joue sur la rue. Il joue dans la rue. A street is an enclosed space.
Je vais dans train. Je vais en train. en for the means, and no article.
Je suis dans Canada. Je suis au Canada. Use au/en for countries, not dans.
dans Paris à Paris à for cities.
Elle boit de un verre. Elle boit dans un verre. Drinking from a glass is dans un verre.
Je suis dans Paris. Je suis à Paris. For a city, use à.
Il y a du bruit dans les environs. (a street scene) Il y a du bruit dans la rue. A street is a bounded place: dans la rue.

Note: dans Paris isn’t grammatically wrong, but its meaning shifts — “within the boundaries of Paris,” as if speaking with a map in hand. In ordinary conversation, à Paris is correct.

7 Where the Simple Rules Break

  • Il y a beaucoup de monde dans la rue aujourd’hui. — There are a lot of people on the street today.
  • J’ai lu cette annonce dans le journal, pas sur internet. — I read that ad in the newspaper, not online.
  • Elle travaille dans le domaine de la santé depuis dix ans. — She has worked in healthcare for ten years.

What's the difference between dans le train and en train?

en train describes the means of travel — how you got somewhere (Je vais à Québec en train). dans le train describes a location inside one specific train — where you are (J'ai oublié mon sac dans le train). The first is a method, the second is a place.

Does an article always follow dans?

Almost always. dans refers to a specific, bounded space, so the noun needs an article: dans la boîte, dans un tiroir. This is the most reliable way to tell it apart from en, since an article almost never follows en.

For a street, is it dans or sur?

dans la rue is correct in French — a street is treated as an enclosed space between buildings. Translating English's "on the street" directly as sur la rue is a mistake, even though you may hear it in Quebec sometimes.

What does dans deux jours mean?

Two days from today. dans always counts forward from the moment of speaking, so it's always about the future. For the past, use il y a: il y a deux jours = two days ago.
