French Preposition sans: Without, Absence and Fixed Expressions
Sans means without. Before a noun it takes no article (sans sucre, sans problème); before a verb it takes the infinitive (sans parler, sans rien dire), never -ant; sans doute means probably. Its opposite is avec.
After sans use the positive negative words, with no ne or pas: sans rien dire, sans parler à personne, sans jamais. An article returns only for one specific thing (sans le livre que tu m'as prêté). Sans-abri and sans-emploi are fixed.
