French Preposition chez: At Someone's Place, Practice or Culture
Chez + a person or group means at or to that person's place: chez moi, chez le médecin, chez Marie. Use it for a home, a professional's office, a company (chez Bombardier) and, figuratively, a culture (chez les Français). Never put à before it.
Chez is followed by a person, a group or a stressed pronoun (moi, toi, lui, elle, nous, vous, eux, elles), never by a place. A shop takes à (à la pharmacie), but the professional takes chez (chez le pharmacien).
Getting Started
chez has no single English equivalent. It always names a place attached to a person or group — a home, an office, a company, or, figuratively, a culture.
A bridge from Punjabi and Hindi: ਡਾਕਟਰ ਕੋਲ ਜਾਣਾ / डॉक्टर के पास जाना and ਮਾਸੀ ਦੇ ਘਰ / मौसी के घर are both chez: aller chez le médecin, chez ma tante. Punjabi and Hindi use the same “with/at” word for a person’s place (ਕੋਲ, ਦੇ ਘਰ; के पास, के घर), so think of chez as that word. English has no equivalent, which is why chez nous (“back home”) has no single translation.
