Getting Started

après means “after,” the direct opposite of avant. The most important thing in this lesson is not confusing après with d’après — two different words.

1. Time

French Use Example
après neuf heures after nine o’clock Le magasin ouvre après neuf heures.
après le travail after work On va au restaurant après le travail.
après 2020 after 2020 Elle est née après 2020.
après le repas after the meal On prend le café après le repas.
après l’école after school Les enfants jouent dehors après l’école.

2. après avoir/être + Participle (the Past Infinitive)

French English Example
après avoir mangé after eating Après avoir mangé, il a fait la vaisselle.
après être arrivée after arriving Après être arrivée, elle a téléphoné à sa mère.
après avoir fini after finishing Après avoir fini ses devoirs, il a regardé la télé.
après avoir téléphoné after calling Après avoir téléphoné à sa mère, elle s’est sentie mieux.

Note: a plain infinitive is never used for ‘after doing X’. The choice of avoir/être follows the same rule as the passé composé.

3. d’après — According To

French English Example
d’après le journal according to the newspaper D’après le journal, il va pleuvoir demain.
d’après lui according to him D’après lui, la réunion commence à neuf heures.

Note: d’après is a separate word, not a plain form of après. It means ‘according to what someone said or wrote’, not time.

4. Politeness

French English Example
après vous after you Après vous, madame.
