The key rule

Je travaille chez + the employer, dans + a kind of place, comme + the job (no article).

Je travaille à Purolator comme un chauffeur.
Je travaille chez Purolator comme chauffeur.

Ask: is it a company, a kind of place, or your job? Chez Tim Hortons, dans une banque, comme caissier. After être, a job has no article either: je suis infirmière.

Getting Started

Work vocabulary helps you describe your job, routine, meetings, and plans. In TEF/TCF Canada, you might hear or need to answer questions like “What do you do?” or “Describe your work day.” These words will help you respond clearly.

The one question: is it a company, a kind of place, or your job? That decides the little word before it: chez Purolator, dans une banque, comme chauffeur.

By the end you can:

  • name the people, things and tasks of an office or a workplace;
  • say where and as what you work (chez, dans, au, comme);
  • avoid the false friends (le délai, l’entretien, la formation) and use the Canadian words (le quart de travail, le courriel).

Note: Gurmukhi pronunciation is approximate. Practice the nasal vowels, final consonants, and French r with real audio.

1 Office Nouns

le délai time allowed Vous avez un délai de trois jours. You have three days (to do it).
la date limite deadline La date limite est demain. The deadline is tomorrow.
le contrat contract Je signe le contrat. I sign the contract.
le salaire salary Le salaire est bon. The salary is good.

Examples:

  • La réunion commence à dix heures. (The meeting starts at ten.)
  • Le projet avance bien. (The project is moving well.)
  • J’envoie le rapport. (I send the report.)

2 Roles and Job Positions

Note: Entretien means both interview (job) and maintenance. In work contexts, “J’ai un entretien demain” means “I have an interview tomorrow.”

3 Essential Verbs

terminer to finish Je termine le projet demain. I finish the project tomorrow.
envoyer to send J’envoie le rapport. I send the report.

aider to help Je vais t’aider. I’m going to help you.
postuler to apply Je vais postuler. I’m going to apply.

4 Short Speaking Patterns

La date limite est demain. The deadline is tomorrow.
Je vais envoyer mon CV. I’m going to send my résumé.
Je suis employé(e). I am an employee.
Je travaille comme manager. I work as a manager.

5 Where and As What You Work: chez, dans, au, comme

Question Word Example
A company or employer? chez Je travaille chez Purolator.
A kind of place or a sector? dans + un / une / la Je travaille dans une banque, dans la construction.
The place itself? au / à la / à l’ Je travaille au bureau, **à l’**hôpital.
Your job? comme, no article Je travaille comme caissier.
  • After être, a job also takes no article: Je suis infirmière, Il est chauffeur. Add one only with an adjective: C’est un bon chauffeur.
  • How you work: à temps plein (full-time), à temps partiel (part-time), en télétravail (from home).

6 Words That Trick You

  • le délai is the time you are given (un délai de trois jours); the deadline is la date limite (or l’échéance).
  • l’entretien is a job interview (un entretien d’embauche) and also maintenance (l’entretien de la voiture).
  • le bureau is the office and the desk.
  • la formation is training, not “formation”.
  • le stage is an internship; le/la stagiaire is the intern.
  • le poste is a position (and a phone extension: poste 214); la poste is the post office.

Canadian words you will hear at work: le courriel (email), le quart de travail (shift), la paie (pay), l’horaire (schedule), les heures supplémentaires (overtime), un congé de maladie (sick leave), and le dîner for lunch at noon (le souper is the evening meal).

7 A Short Exchange: First Day at Work

  • Superviseure : Bonjour, bienvenue dans l’équipe ! Vous commencez aujourd’hui ?
  • Gurpreet : Oui, bonjour. Je suis le nouveau commis d’entrepôt.
  • Superviseure : Parfait. Votre quart de travail commence à sept heures et finit à quinze heures trente.
  • Gurpreet : D’accord. Et la pause, c’est à quelle heure ?
  • Superviseure : Quinze minutes à dix heures, et le dîner à midi.
  • Gurpreet : Est-ce qu’il y a une formation ?

Your Turn: Talk About Your Job

A classic TEF/TCF speaking question: Parlez-moi de votre travail. Answer in five or six sentences: where you work, as what, your hours, what you do, your team, and one plan.

Model answer: Je travaille chez Purolator, dans un grand entrepôt à Brampton. Je travaille comme commis d’entrepôt, à temps plein. Mon quart de travail commence à sept heures et finit à quinze heures trente. Je prépare les colis et j’aide les chauffeurs. Mon équipe est très sympa, et ma superviseure m’aide beaucoup. L’année prochaine, je vais suivre une formation pour devenir chef d’équipe.

What makes it work: each opening word answers one question (chez the company, dans the place, comme the job, no article); a Canadian word (quart de travail) and a time (à sept heures); everyday verbs in the present (je prépare, j’aide); and one plan with aller + infinitive to finish.

FAQ

Can 'le bureau' mean both office and desk?

Yes. Context tells you the meaning. Je vais au bureau = I'm going to the office. Le livre est sur le bureau = The book is on the desk.

Is 'collègue' masculine or feminine?

The spelling stays the same: le collègue or la collègue. The article shows the gender.

How do you say where you work in French?

Chez + the employer (je travaille chez Purolator), dans + a kind of place (dans une banque, dans la construction), au / à la + the place (au bureau, à l'hôpital), and comme + the job with no article (comme caissier).

Is 'le délai' the deadline?

Not quite. Le délai is the time you are given: vous avez un délai de trois jours. The deadline itself is la date limite (or l'échéance): la date limite est vendredi.
