Getting Started

Health vocabulary is essential for daily life in Canada and TEF/TCF Canada exam role-plays. Booking a doctor’s appointment, describing symptoms to a pharmacist, or explaining a medical situation are core A2 speaking tasks.

This lesson covers health terms, collocations, Canadian usage, pronunciation notes, and TEF/TCF practice tasks.

Note: Gurmukhi and English phonetic transcriptions are practical approximations. French sounds like nasal vowels, the rounded /y/ vowel, and the uvular /ʁ/ should be confirmed against real audio from RFI or Radio-Canada.

depuis quand ? since when? ਦੁਪਵੀ ਕਾਂ ਕਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ?

How the Grammar Works

Why “au dos” and not “à le dos”

Describing pain with j’ai mal à… follows the standard French contraction rule for à + definite articles (le, la, l’, les).

You would expect French contracts to Why
à + le au /o/ mandatory contraction
à + les aux /o/ mandatory contraction
à + la à la no contraction
à + l’ à l’ elision before vowel / silent h

The choice depends on the gender and number of the noun:

  • le dos (m.) → J’ai mal au dos. (My back hurts.)
  • la tête (f.) → J’ai mal à la tête. (I have a headache.)
  • l’oreille (elided) → J’ai mal à l’oreille. (My ear hurts.)
  • les dents (pl.) → J’ai mal aux dents. (My teeth hurt.)

The same contraction rule applies outside medical settings: je vais au bureau, je parle aux voisins, je vais à la banque.

⚠️ TEF trap: de + le = du and de + les = des follow the identical pattern (je viens du médecin, parler des symptômes).

Expressing Duration with “depuis”

In French, ongoing states that started in the past use depuis + Present Tense.

  • Incorrect: J’ai été malade pour trois jours.
  • Correct: Je suis malade depuis trois jours.

When asked Depuis quand avez-vous de la fièvre ?, reply in the present tense: J’ai de la fièvre depuis hier.

Symptoms and Feelings: avoir vs. être vs. se sentir

  • avoir + noun for physical symptoms: J’ai de la fièvre, J’ai des nausées.
  • être + adjective for general state: Je suis malade, Je suis fatigué(e).
  • se sentir + adverb for internal feeling: Je me sens faible, Je me sens mieux.

Register and Canadian Usage

  • Formal: un médecin, une consultation, une ordonnance.
  • Neutral: un docteur, un rendez-vous, être malade.
  • Colloquial: être à plat (exhausted), avoir un coup de froid (catch a chill).

Canadian French Specifics

  • La carte d’assurance maladie: Official name for provincial health cards in Canada.
  • La clinique sans rendez-vous: Standard Canadian term for walk-in medical clinics.
  • Feminisation of titles: La médecin or la docteure is standard Canadian usage.

Sounds You Will Get Wrong

  1. l’urgence /yʁʒɑ̃s/ — Vowel /y/ vs /u/. French u in urgence /yʁʒɑ̃s/ is rounded front vowel /y/. Round lips for “oo” (/u/) while keeping tongue forward as in “ee” (/i/). Contrast u in urgence with ou in toux /tu/.

  2. médecin /med.sɛ̃/ — Schwa deletion. In médecin, the middle e drops (schwa deletion). d is /d/ and c is /s/. Pronounced in two syllables: /med.sɛ̃/ (med-sain), not “med-e-sin”.

  3. le rhume /ʁym/ — Silent h and nasal vowel distinction. In rhume, h is silent; initial consonant is uvular /ʁ/. Rhume ends in consonantal /m/ (/ʁym/), not a nasal vowel. However, un in un rhume is nasal (/œ̃/).
