French Preposition sous: Under, Beneath and Figurative Uses
Getting Started
sous is the easiest preposition to learn here, because its physical meaning is the direct opposite of sur: not on top, underneath.
The part worth paying attention to isn’t the physical meaning — it’s the dozen or so places where nothing is literally above anything, and French still uses sous: rain, sun, pressure, contracts, deadlines.
1. Physical Space — Underneath Something

Note: a noun must follow sous. sous alone can’t stand at the end of a sentence — for that, there’s dessous (see Section 5 below).
2. Weather — What Falls From Above
French treats weather as something coming from above, and you’re underneath it.

Note: dans la pluie is wrong. English says “in the rain,” French says “under the rain.” The same thinking applies to snow and sun.
3. Under the Influence or Control Of (Figurative)
Here, nothing is physically above anything. The idea is being subject to a force, condition or rule.

Note: Most of these take no article: sous pression, sous contrat, sous serment. These are fixed expressions and have to be memorized exactly as they are.
4. Deadlines and Periods

Note: This is official and administrative language. In a French letter from IRCC, a bank or an insurance company, sous trente jours means “within thirty days,” not “thirty days later.” This distinction can be costly.
sous also appears historically for a period of rule: sous Louis XIV, sous le gouvernement actuel.
5. sous vs. dessous

The same pair exists above: sur with a noun, dessus alone, ci-dessus in writing.

What's the difference between sous and dessous?
sous must be followed by a noun: Le chat est sous la table. dessous stands alone, used when the noun is already known: La table? Le chat est dessous. It's the same pair as sur and dessus.
Why not dans la pluie for standing in the rain?
French treats rain as something falling from above, which you're underneath — hence sous la pluie. The same thinking applies to sous le soleil and sous la neige.
What does sous peu mean?
Shortly, before long. It's common in official letters and notices: Vous recevrez une réponse sous peu = you'll receive a reply shortly. Letters like those from IRCC also use sous 30 jours, meaning within thirty days.
Is sous always physically "under"?
No. Many figurative uses have nothing physically above anything: sous pression (under pressure), sous contrat (under contract), sous la main (at hand, within reach). The idea is the same in each — being under the influence or control of something.
