French News and Current Events Vocabulary

The key rule

In the news, a verb in the conditionnel means 'reportedly': the information is not confirmed.

Le maire serait malade = the mayor would be sick.
Le maire serait malade = the mayor is reportedly sick.

The passive reports facts (le projet a été adopté), and selon / d'après names the source.

Getting Started

Talking about the news is part of everyday conversation in Canada. TEF and TCF speaking and writing tasks often ask you to discuss society, the economy or a recent event and give your opinion, and these words let you do that clearly.

Note: Pronunciation is approximate. Practise the French r, the nasal vowels and silent final letters with real audio.

5 How the news is written: three signals

The vocabulary above is only half of reading the news. Three grammar signals tell you what happened and how sure the journalist is:

  • The passive: the event matters more than who did it. Le projet a été adopté hier. Trois personnes ont été blessées. Les résultats seront publiés lundi. See the passive voice.
  • The conditionnel: not confirmed. Le ministre démissionnerait = the minister is reportedly resigning. L’accident aurait fait deux victimes = reportedly caused. A reading question often asks exactly this: is it certain? See the conditionnel.
  • The source: selon, d’après. Selon la police… D’après nos informations… Selon un sondage… The information belongs to that source, not to the journalist.

Practice

A. Write the news: passive, conditionnel or source?

  1. Le nouveau pont ______ (inaugurer) hier par la mairesse.
  2. Selon nos informations, le ministre ______ (démissionner) bientôt.
  3. Trois personnes ______ (blesser) dans l’accident.
  4. ______ la police, l’incendie aurait commencé dans la cuisine.
  5. La nouvelle loi ______ (adopter) la semaine prochaine.

Answers

A. 1. a été inauguré (a fact: passive) · 2. démissionnerait (not confirmed) · 3. ont été blessées (passive, agrees with personnes) · 4. Selon / D’après (the source) · 5. sera adoptée (future passive)

Your Turn: Retell the News

Read this news item, then retell it out loud in three sentences, in your own words: one passive, one selon or d’après, and one conditionnel for what is not confirmed.

Un incendie s’est déclaré hier soir dans un immeuble de Laval. Les pompiers ont évacué quarante résidents. Selon les premières informations, le feu aurait commencé dans un restaurant au rez-de-chaussée. Personne n’a été blessé.

Model answer: Hier soir, un immeuble de Laval a été touché par un incendie. Quarante résidents ont été évacués par les pompiers, mais personne n’a été blessé. D’après les premières informations, le feu aurait commencé dans un restaurant.

Notice how much changes and how little is copied: the events move into the passive, and the unconfirmed cause keeps its conditionnel (aurait commencé). How to build a longer summary is in Summarizing in French.
