French Weather and Nature Vocabulary
Getting Started
Weather and nature vocabulary is essential for daily life in Canada and TEF/TCF Canada exam tasks. Discussing the forecast, describing daily routines based on climate, understanding weather alerts, and talking about seasonal activities are core A1 skills.
This lesson covers weather expressions, nature vocabulary, season prepositions (en vs. au), Canadian winter terms, dialogues, and practice exercises.
Note: Gurmukhi and English phonetic transcriptions are practical approximations. French nasal vowels (as in vent /vɑ̃/ or printemps /pʁɛ̃.tɑ̃/), silent letters, and uvular /ʁ/ sounds should be verified against authentic audio from Radio-Canada or RFI.

How the Grammar Works
Impersonal Weather Structures: il fait vs. il pleut
In French, weather expressions use an impersonal pronoun (il), acting as a dummy grammatical subject:
-
il fait + adjective/noun:
- Il fait beau. (It is nice out.)
- Il fait froid. (It is cold.)
- Il fait du vent. (It is windy.)
-
impersonal verbs (conjugated only in the 3rd person singular il):
- Il pleut. (It is raining — infinitive pleuvoir).
- Il neige. (It is snowing — infinitive neiger).
- Il gèle. (It is freezing — infinitive geler).
⚠️ TEF Trap: Do NOT use the verb être for weather (Il est froid or Le temps est pleut are ungrammatical). Always use Il fait + adj or Il + verb.
Season Prepositions: en vs. au
| Season | Preposition | Example | Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| l’hiver (m.) | en | en hiver | Starts with silent h |
| l’été (m.) | en | en été | Starts with vowel |
| l’automne (m.) | en | en automne | Starts with vowel |
| le printemps (m.) | au | au printemps | Starts with consonant (à + le = au) |
- J’aime faire du ski en hiver.
- Les fleurs poussent au printemps.
Sub-Zero Temperatures in Canada
In Canadian winter, temperatures frequently drop below zero Celsius. Express sub-zero temperatures using moins + number:
- Il fait moins cinq. (-5°C)
- Il fait moins vingt avec le facteur vent. (-20°C with windchill)
Register and Canadian Usage
Canadian Climate Vocabulary
Canada’s distinct climate introduces specialized vocabulary used in daily news broadcasts (la météo) and conversations:
- La poudrerie: Canadian French term for blowing snow caused by strong winds.
- Le verglas: Freezing rain that creates hazardous black ice on roads and sidewalks.
- La pelletée de neige: Shovelling snow (a daily winter activity in Canadian provinces).
- Avoir un refroidissement éolien: Windchill factor (la température ressentie).
Sounds You Will Get Wrong
-
printemps /pʁɛ̃.tɑ̃/ — Two distinct nasal vowels. The word printemps contains two different nasal vowels: the first syllable prin- is /ɛ̃/ (nasal “in”), and the second syllable -temps is /ɑ̃/ (nasal “an”). The final letters ps are completely silent.
-
automne /o.tɔn/ — Silent letter ‘m’. In l’automne, the letter m before n is completely silent. It is pronounced /o.tɔn/ (“o-tonn”), NOT “au-tumn”.
-
froid /fʁwa/ vs. froide /fʁwad/ — Silent final ‘d’ in masculine. In il fait froid, the final letter d is silent (/fʁwa/). In the feminine form une journée froide, the final d is pronounced (/fʁwad/).
