What the story says

  • Paragraph 1: Today is Amrit’s French exam, the TEF. He has been preparing for months.
  • Paragraph 2: He wakes up at six. He is a little nervous but also ready. He eats a good breakfast because he knows an empty stomach slows the mind, then packs his documents and leaves.
  • Paragraph 3: Arriving at the test centre, he sees many other candidates — some still revising, others waiting in silence. He stops revising; he would rather stay calm.
  • Paragraph 4: The invigilator opens the door and everyone goes in. Amrit listens carefully to the instructions and switches off his phone.
  • Paragraph 5: First the reading (compréhension écrite), then the writing (expression écrite), and finally the listening (compréhension orale). It is hard, but he stays calm.
  • Paragraph 6: Coming out, he is tired but happy. He did his best, so he feels proud. That evening he waits for his results.

Grammar Spotlight

  • #10 d’abord · #12 ensuite · #13 enfin — sequence markers. Together they form one ordered chain: d’abord (first) the reading, ensuite (next) the writing, enfin (finally) the listening. They only fit in the right order.
  • #2 parce que vs #16 donc — same logic, opposite direction. parce que gives the cause: “Il est confiant parce qu’il a beaucoup révisé” (confident — why? because he revised). donc gives the result: “Il a fait de son mieux, donc il est fier” (he did his best — result? he’s proud). Same cause and effect, but parce que puts the cause second and donc puts it first.
  • #1 · #6 · #11 mais — contrast. mais joins two opposite ideas: “nerveux, mais aussi prêt” (nervous but also ready).
  • #4 · #5 · #14 quand — time. quand (when) opens a time clause: “Quand il arrive au centre, il voit…” (When he arrives, he sees…).
