What the Story Says
- Paragraph 1: Gurpreet arrived in Montreal in August 2024. At first everything was easy: it was hot, the café terraces were full, and after work he often went for walks along the Lachine Canal. His Quebec colleagues told him several times, “Wait for winter!” but he didn’t really believe them.
- Paragraph 2: One January morning he woke up at six and opened the curtains. Outside everything was white and snow was still falling. More than forty centimetres had fallen during the night.
- Paragraph 3: He took a shovel and went out. His car had vanished: only the antenna stuck out of the snow. He started shovelling, but after twenty minutes his back already hurt and he was hardly making progress.
- Paragraph 4: That’s when his neighbour, Madame Tremblay, turned up with a snowblower. She was seventy, but she cleared the car in ten minutes! While she worked, she talked to him about the great ice storm of 1998.
- Paragraph 5: Then she invited Gurpreet in for a coffee. Her kitchen smelled of warm bread, and through the window you could see the neighbourhood children sliding in the snow. That day Gurpreet understood something important: in Quebec the winter is long, but the neighbours are warm.
- Paragraph 6: That evening he phoned his mother in Jalandhar. “So, were you cold?” she asked. Gurpreet laughed: “A bit. But I’ve made a new friend!”

Grammar Spotlight
- Scene vs event. In paragraph 1, #1 est arrivé is an event (with a date), while #2–#4 (était, faisait, étaient) only set the scene: what things were like at the time. Paragraph 2 has the same pair: #7–#8 are events (woke up, opened the curtains), #9–#10 are what he saw (était blanc, tombait encore).
- Habit vs count. #5 se promenait souvent: souvent marks a repeated habit → imparfait. #6 ont répété plusieurs fois: plusieurs fois is a countable number of times → passé composé.
- An action with a duration can still be an event. #18 a dégagé la voiture en dix minutes: the job took ten minutes, but it was completed, so passé composé. #19 pendant qu’elle travaillait: background in progress after pendant que → imparfait. And #17, age (elle avait soixante-dix ans), is always imparfait.
- Not a blank, but notice: il était tombé plus de quarante centimètres is the plus-que-parfait: the snow had fallen before he woke up. And the last sentence, l’hiver est long, is in the present because it is still true today.

FAQ
Why 'il faisait chaud' but 'il a pris une pelle'?
The imparfait sets the scene: weather, age, habits, what was going on. The passé composé moves the story forward: events that happened one after another. Ask yourself: does something new happen in the story at this point? Yes → passé composé.
