The key rule

Use jouer à for games with a ball or an opponent (Je joue au hockey), faire de for other activities (Je fais de la natation, Je fais du ski), and jouer de for instruments (Il joue du piano). In Canada, the round-ball game is le soccer.

Je fais au hockey. Je joue de la natation. Il joue au piano.
Je joue au hockey. Je fais de la natation. Il joue du piano.

à + le = au, de + le = du, and the h of hockey is aspirated: le hockey, au hockey, never l'hockey. After a negative, de: Je ne fais pas de sport.

Getting Started

Sport is part of everyday conversation in Canada — especially hockey and skating in winter. These words also help you answer TEF and TCF speaking questions such as “What do you do in your free time?”

Note: Pronunciation is approximate. Practise the French r, the nasal vowels and silent final letters with real audio.

A bridge from Punjabi and Hindi: Punjabi and Hindi also use two verbs: ਹਾਕੀ ਖੇਡਣੀ / हॉकी खेलना (“play hockey”) but ਤੈਰਾਕੀ ਕਰਨੀ / तैराकी करना (“do swimming”) and ਕਸਰਤ ਕਰਨੀ / कसरत करना. French draws the same line with jouer à (play) and faire de (do). The bridge stops at the preposition: French needs à or de plus an article before the name of the activity (au hockey, du ski, de la natation), which Punjabi and Hindi do not have.

Jouer à, Jouer de and Faire de

For Pattern Example
A game with a ball or an opponent jouer à + article (à + le = au, à + les = aux) Je joue au hockey. Elle joue aux échecs.
Other exercise and activities faire de + article (de + le = du) Je fais du ski. Je fais de la natation.
An instrument jouer de + article Il joue du piano. Elle joue de la guitare.
Yes → no de replaces the article after a negative Je ne fais pas de sport.

Where the Simple Rules Break

Situation What happens Example
Jouer à vs. jouer de À for a game, de for an instrument Je joue au soccer. / Je joue du piano.
Jouer vs. faire In Quebec speech the line is sometimes blurred (for example faire du soccer); use the rule above in the exam Je joue au soccer.
Aspirated h The h of hockey is not pronounced but blocks elision le hockey, au hockey, never l’hockey
Football vs. soccer In Canada the round-ball game is le soccer; in France it is le football Je joue au soccer. (Canada)
Patin vs. patinage Un patin is a skate and le patinage is the sport; in Canada both faire du patin and aller patiner are heard On fait du patin au parc.
Le samedi vs. samedi Le samedi = every Saturday, samedi = this Saturday Je joue le samedi. / Je joue samedi.
S’entraîner A reflexive verb, so me/te/se Je **m’**entraîne trois fois par semaine.
Le gym vs. la gym In Canada le gym is a gym; in France la gym is gymnastics Je vais au gym.
Sportif / sportive The adjective agrees with the person Mon frère est sportif. / Ma sœur est sportive.

Sports in Canada

  • Le hockey: the best-known winter sport. A game is un match de hockey, and the professional league is la LNH (Ligue nationale de hockey).
  • La patinoire: many towns have free outdoor rinks where people patiner.
  • Le ski de fond, la raquette: winter outings; la randonnée is for summer.
  • Le soccer: very common as a children’s team sport and a community game.

Sounds You Will Get Wrong

  1. hockey: the h is not pronounced (“oh-kay”), but it is aspirated, so there is no liaison in les hockeys.
  2. sport / sportif: the final t of sport is silent, but sportif ends in a pronounced f and sportive in v.
  3. match: an English loanword, so ch is like English “ch”, not the usual French “sh”.
  4. but: the final t is pronounced here (“boot”), while most final t’s are silent.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Wrong Right Why
Je fais au hockey. Je joue au hockey. Jouer à for a game with an opponent.
Je joue de la natation. Je fais de la natation. Faire de for exercise and activities.
Je joue à le soccer. Je joue au soccer. À + le contracts to au.
Je fais du natation. Je fais de la natation. Natation is feminine.
Je joue à l’hockey. Je joue au hockey. The h of hockey is aspirated, so no l’.
Il joue au piano. Il joue du piano. Jouer de for an instrument.
Je ne fais pas du sport. Je ne fais pas de sport. After a negative, du becomes de.
