Talking About Films, Books and Shows in French: Vocabulary for Reviews

The key rule

A review gives the subject, your opinion, a reason and a recommendation.

C'est bien.
J'ai adoré ce film, parce que les acteurs sont excellents. Je vous le recommande.

Vary the adjectives: passionnant, émouvant, drôle, ennuyeux, décevant.

Getting Started

“What did you watch last night? Was it good?” That conversation comes up at work, with friends, and in the TEF/TCF speaking tests. At A2, “C’était bien” was enough. At B1 the examiner expects you to outline the story, pick the right adjective and say why you liked it or not.

The basic leisure words are covered at A2 in Sports and Fitness Vocabulary. This lesson is the next step.

5 How to structure a review

  1. Identify it: title, genre, where you watched or read it.
  2. A short summary without the ending: where, when, who, what the problem is.
  3. Your opinion and why: one strength, one weakness.
  4. A recommendation: who should watch it.

Tell the story in the present tense (le héros arrive, il découvre) and your own experience in the passé composé (j’ai adoré, je me suis ennuyé).

6 Model review

A review of a fictional series, written for practice:

7 What to watch and read in French

  • ICI TOU.TV, Radio-Canada’s streaming platform, full of Quebec series.
  • Switch the language on streaming services: many films also exist in version française. Start with French audio + French subtitles.
  • Public libraries: Canadian public libraries are free and carry French books, BD and audiobooks.
