French Idioms, Set 2: Register and Precise Synonyms
Choose the register before the word: familier with friends, courant everywhere, soutenu in formal writing. And replace faire, dire and il y a with precise verbs.
Soutenu is not always better: a formal word among friends sounds as odd as slang in a letter.
Getting Started
At B1 you can get your meaning across. At B2 the examiner is checking whether you choose the right word and the right register: an apt idiom in a meeting, commettre une erreur rather than se planter in a formal letter, and an essay that doesn’t lean on faire and il y a in every sentence.
This lesson has three parts: a second set of idioms (set 1 is here), one idea in three registers, and precise replacements for all-purpose words.
From Punjabi: Punjabi also changes whole words with register: ਖਾਣਾ is the everyday verb and ਭੋਜਨ ਕਰਨਾ the formal one, with casual words for the same act among friends. French works the same way: manger everyday, se restaurer formal, bouffer slang. And as in Punjabi, the formal word among friends sounds odd.
1. Idioms for Work and Decisions
| Expression | Literally | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| prendre le taureau par les cornes | to take the bull by the horns | to tackle a problem head-on | Il faut prendre le taureau par les cornes et parler au patron. |
| mettre la charrue avant les bœufs | to put the plough before the oxen | to put the cart before the horse | Acheter les meubles avant de trouver l’appartement, c’est mettre la charrue avant les bœufs. |
| jeter l’éponge | to throw the sponge | to throw in the towel | Après trois refus, elle n’a pas jeté l’éponge. |
| avoir plusieurs cordes à son arc | to have several strings to one’s bow | to have more than one skill to fall back on | Avec son expérience en vente et en comptabilité, il a plusieurs cordes à son arc. |
| avoir le bras long | to have a long arm | to be well connected | Son oncle a le bras long au ministère. |
| tomber à l’eau | to fall in the water | to fall through | Notre voyage est tombé à l’eau. |
| avoir d’autres chats à fouetter | to have other cats to whip | to have bigger fish to fry | Je n’ai pas le temps pour ça, j’ai d’autres chats à fouetter. |
2. Idioms for Conversation and Debate
| Expression | Literally | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| tourner autour du pot | to go round the pot | to beat around the bush | Arrête de tourner autour du pot : tu acceptes ou non ? |

| noyer le poisson | to drown the fish | to muddy the waters, dodge a question | Le ministre a noyé le poisson au lieu de répondre. |
| enfoncer une porte ouverte | to break down an open door | to state the obvious | Dire que l’hiver est long au Canada, c’est enfoncer une porte ouverte. |
| mettre de l’eau dans son vin | to put water in one’s wine | to soften one’s position | Les deux côtés ont dû mettre de l’eau dans leur vin. |
| être dans le même bateau | to be in the same boat | to be in the same situation | Tous les nouveaux arrivants sont dans le même bateau. |
Note: A few match English closely (être dans le même bateau, prendre le taureau par les cornes), which makes them easy to remember. Don’t assume the rest do: avoir le bras long has nothing to do with long arms, and jeter la serviette is an English calque, so keep to jeter l’éponge.
3. One Idea, Three Registers
French has three main registers: familier (with friends), courant (fine everywhere) and soutenu (formal writing, speeches). Unlike English, where the difference is mostly tone, whole verbs and nouns change.
| Familier | Courant | Soutenu | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| bosser | travailler | exercer une activité | to work |
| bouffer | manger | se restaurer | to eat |
| piger | comprendre | saisir | to understand |
| se planter | se tromper | commettre une erreur | to make a mistake |
| flipper | avoir peur | craindre | to be afraid |
| virer quelqu’un | renvoyer quelqu’un | congédier quelqu’un | to fire someone |
| jaser (Québec), causer (France) | parler | s’entretenir avec | to talk |
| c’est nul | ce n’est pas bien | c’est insatisfaisant | it’s bad |
4. Precise Words for All-Purpose Ones

Model answer: Madame, Monsieur, j’ai travaillé trois ans au sein de votre entreprise, mais je crains de perdre mon emploi. De nombreux problèmes demeurent sans solution.

FAQ
Which register should I use in TEF or TCF writing?
Courant for letters and essays, with soutenu words where they fit: commettre une erreur, rencontrer une difficulté, de nombreux. Never familier (bosser, bouffer, flipper) in writing, except in an informal message to a friend.
Are soutenu words always better?
No. Saying 'je me suis restauré' to a friend sounds odd. B2 means choosing the right register for the situation, not the heaviest word available.
Where is the first set of idioms?
French Idioms, Set 1 has 27 everyday idioms (coûter les yeux de la tête, avoir du pain sur la planche…). This set focuses on idioms for work, negotiation and debate.
