French pronominal verb practice

Fill the blank with the right form of a reflexive verb. The infinitive is given, so there is exactly one correct answer — and you type it rather than picking it, because producing the form, pronoun included, is what expression écrite actually marks.

Conjugate

The reflexive pronoun, by subject

Every pronominal verb pairs its subject with a matching reflexive pronoun. me, te and se contract to m', t' and s' before a vowel sound — s'appeler, s'habiller, s'amuser. nous and vous never contract, even before a vowel: nous nous appelons, not nous n'appelons.

The reflexive pronoun for each subject, with and without elision

tutetu te lavestu t'appelles
il / elleseil se laveelle s'appelle

ils / ellesseils se laventelles s'appellent

Passé composé: the agreement a direct object blocks

Every pronominal verb takes être in the passé composé, and the past participle usually agrees with the reflexive pronoun — because most of the time that pronoun is the direct object. Elle s'est lavée. ("she washed herself") agrees for exactly that reason: there is nothing else in the sentence for the verb to act on.

Add a direct object of its own — a body part, most often — and the agreement disappears, because the reflexive pronoun is no longer the thing being washed:

Agreement with the reflexive pronoun, and what blocks it
FrenchEnglishWhy
Elle s'est lavée.She washed (herself). No other object — the pronoun is the direct object, so it agrees.
Elle s'est lavé les mains. She washed her hands.les mains is the direct object instead, so the participle stays invariable.

This is the same rule behind why se laver les mains uses les rather than a possessive at all — see the article-vs-possessive lesson for the present-tense version of that trap.

What is in the bank

32 sentences covering 10 reflexive verbs, split 25 present and 7 passé composé. se laver, se lever and s'appeler are conjugated across all six persons; the rest cover one sentence each, and the two passé composé pairs above are what the agreement rule sounds like in a real sentence.
