Why these two get mixed up
Demonstrative and possessive adjectives sit in exactly the same slot — right before the noun, where an article would otherwise go — so a learner who has just drilled one family in isolation still hesitates the moment both are on the table. Both also agree with the noun that follows them, never with anything else in the sentence, which is the part that keeps causing mistakes: sa voiture is correct whether the owner is Paul or Marie, because voiture is feminine — not because of who owns it.
The reflex to unlearn is translating English gender onto the noun. "His car" and "her car" are two different phrases in English and one phrase in French, and "my clothes" and "your address" hide an elision rule (ma → mon before a vowel) that has nothing to do with meaning at all.
